  • DAY THREE - BIG PICTURE IN A YEAR - THE CREATION

    One of my favourite God-memories is when I went to watch The Blue Planet at an IMAX theatre in Cape Town. The movie started and the camera moved through space towards a small blue ball, Earth. God spoke more clearly than I’ve ever heard Him speak before and told me simply this: “I made it with so much love”. There I was, watching a movie about something He had made for us, with so much love, and I was watching it with Him. It was an unforgettable moment. Needless to say, I cried most of the way through.

    Beginnings are very important. Start as you mean to go on is advice we give to anyone starting out in a new venture. Start as you mean to go on we tell the new young bride. In other words, don’t think that he’ll offer to help with the dishes eventually as time goes on; no, insist that he does his fair share from the word go. Start as you mean to go on we tell the businessman. In other words, don’t be too chummy with your employees now, if later, you’re going to have to manage them for the good of the company.

    Every author knows that the opening line of any book has to be arresting and engaging. It has to grip the reader, offer him some taste of what is to come and draw him in to read further. The Bible offers us possibly the most intriguing and gripping of all opening lines. It reads like the once upon a time of our fairytales, doesn’t it?

  • STARTING TOMORROW - BIG PICTURE IN A YEAR

    We had a great response to our #Countdown to Christmas devotions. From 1 January we have another meaningful series for you - #Big Picture in a Year.

    The Big Picture in a year is a series of 365 daily devotions that take you through the whole Bible – from Genesis to Revelation. Each day’s devotion includes ideas, suggestions, links to Youtube videos and discussion points for you to share with your children, whether they’re young or in their teens, so that you can do these devotions as a family or as part of your daily Quiet Time. The devotions were written by various contributors from the Kings Cross team. Looking forward to taking this journey with you in 2021.

    Stephen Covey (7 Habits) wrote that “Habit 2 is based on imagination–the ability to envision in your mind what you cannot at present see with your eyes.” The idea behind beginning with the end in mind is based on the principle that all things are created twice - there is a mental (first) creation, and a physical (second) creation.

  • DAY TWENTY-FOUR (24 DEC 2020) - COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS

    There was speculation that Joseph and Mary were going to settle in Jerusalem because of the angelic prediction of Jesus’ messianic future. But God led them to go back to their humble village of Nazareth in Galilee. There Jesus was raised in obscurity in all the facets of a 1st Century Jewish family, following in his father Joseph’s footsteps until he was released into his ministry at age 30. Despite where Jesus grew up, he totally fulfilled his destined goal of being the Lamb of God who died for the sins of the world.

  • DAY TWENTY-THREE (23 DEC 2020) - COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS

    Luke speaks of “the things that have been fulfilled among us”. These things, the things pertaining to the birth of Christ, were prophesied long before. But at just the right moment in time, the birth of Christ, the incarnation, was fulfilled. The Greek language speaks of this as the kairos time.

  • DAY TWENTY-TWO (22 DEC 2020) - COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS

    John the Baptist burst onto this scene dressed in camel hair and a leather belt boldly declaring that the kingdom of heaven was at hand. Most Jews knew from the Tanakh that this signified that the coming of the Messiah was at hand. And most Jews expected their coming king to be a bold warrior, fearless, bent on driving the Romans from their land.

  • DAY TWENTY-ONE (21 DEC 2020) - COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS

    Yesterday we learned about that great saint of the Old Testament, Simeon. He was not alone in Israel in recognising the significance of this child brought to the Temple by Mary and Joseph. Anna was an elderly prophet who spent most of her time in the Temple, worshipping God and ministering to the people. (Note: there were prophets amongst the people of God who were not necessarily the ‘famous’ ones we all know about; note: some of them were women.)

  • DAY TWENTY (20 DEC 2020) - COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS

    The more you focus on Christmas, the more youthink about Easter. Are you that person? The more you look at Jesus' birth, the more youyearn to trace again that path of his generous life, bitter death, and glorious resurrection. You’re not alone in this regard.     Have you ever seen an angel? Few people have. Maybe you've met someone who has. How would you respond if someone told you that they met an angel who gave them a phenomenal message? What if the person who told you this was a low and dirty person with no social standing?

    How's your Christmas shopping going? All done? If your answer is ‘no’ then don't worry, you're in good company. It's baffling though, isn't it? Christmas falls on the same date every year – it's not a surprise – yet every year most of us are caught off guard. It's almost as though we are those shepherds in the fields, minding our own business, doing our work, when suddenly: BAM! Christmas is upon us.
