DAY ELEVEN - BIG PICTURE IN A YEAR - THE CREATION

“And there was evening, and there was morning, the fifth day.”

Genesis 1: 23

Reading: Genesis 1: 16-23

The diversity and the complexity of the created order speaks of the immensity of God’s intelligence.  It is staggering how, as you begin to look at the Creation with any kind of thought, any kind of depth, you come face-to-face with the immensity of the intelligence and power of God.

On Day 5 of Creation, according to Genesis, God created sea life and avian life. First He filled the waters and the language used to describe this action is interesting.

“Then God said, “Let the waters teem with swarms of living creatures.”

In the Hebrew, this is what is called a paronomasia, which is a term describing a kind of literary device.  A literal translation from the Hebrew would be: “Let the waters swarm with swarming things.” Swarm is the word chosen here for two reasons: Firstly, it has the idea of movement. Plants are not called living creatures because they aren’t mobile.  They don’t move.  Living creatures move.  Secondly, swarm evokes a picture of a large population of creatures in motion. They were all instantaneously created in massive swarms moving through the seas.

Genesis 1: 20 indicates a similar expression regarding sky life.

“Let the birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the heavens.”

Prayer

Lord, You are the One who made all of this for me. I thank You and worship You.
