DAY 254 -BIG PICTURE IN A YEAR - THE UNITED MONARCHY
Reading: 1 Kings 21:1-29
The writer of 1 Kings tells us that there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do wickedness in the sight of the Lord, because Jezebel his wife stirred him up. He behaved very abominably in following after idols, like the Amorites had done, whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel. Jezebel organized Naboth to be falsely accused and killed for blasphemy.
After Elijah brought him God’s response to this foul murder; “The dogs shall eat whoever belongs to Ahab and dies in the city, and the birds of the air shall eat whoever dies in the field” (1 Kings 21:25), strangely enough, Ahab repented in sackcloth. As a result, God delayed His judgment until the next generation of Ahab’s family.
God is strangely merciful, even to a wicked king, and he always responds to genuine repentance. The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, His mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning, new every morning. Great is Thy faithfulness oh LORD!
Prayer
Dear Father, we don’t feel that Ahab deserved mercy. We are glad though, that You show undeserved mercy to the worst of sinners. Where would we be otherwise? Thank You,
For the family
Discuss repentance and how kind and merciful God is to forgive us when we sin, if we will only admit it.
