DAY 243 - BIG PICTURE IN A YEAR -THE UNITED MONARCHY
Reading: 1 Kings 2:1-10; Psalm 2: 7-9; Daniel 7: 13, 14
David had many sons but God chose Solomon to succeed David as king of Israel. Today’s focus is on Solomon, who received a Kingdom from his father David, and more importantly, from the LORD. David’s final words to his son, which we read in today’s reading, are a summary of everything Solomon needed to know in order to receive the Kingdom that God had promised to David.
To be able to keep this Kingdom and to have the blessing of God upon it, Solomon would have to, in the words of David; “Keep the charge of the Lord your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn” (1 Kings 2:3). If Solomon would do this then the Lord would “fulfill His word which He spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons take heed to their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul,’ He said, ‘you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel’ “ (1 Kings 2:4). So Solomon received a Kingdom and ruled over a united nation of Israel.
Looking forward we see Jesus receiving a Kingdom from His Father (cf. Psalm 2:7-9 and Daniel 7:13-14) and we see His enemies and His friends not yet dealt with or rewarded. He will faithfully carry out the will of His Father. When He returns He will deal with His enemies swiftly, and will purge their evil from His Kingdom. Yet, He will remember those who are faithful to Him and they will eat at His table.
Thank you Lord that we will eat at your table. We look forward to your return. Come Lord Jesus and take Your rightful place.
