DAY 241 - BIG PICTURE IN A YEAR -THE UNITED MONARCHY
2 Samuel 7:16
Reading: 2 Samuel 7:1-28
Today’s focus is on the Davidic Covenant that God made with King David. David had wanted to build God a temple, a house of the LORD. The prophet Nathan was quite happy about the idea as well. But guess what? The LORD had other plans!
He announced that He would build David a lasting house, a dynasty that would last eternally. He proclaimed that David’s ‘sons’ would reign on the throne forever and Israel would be forever secure and planted by the LORD. The Bible tells us about quite a number of ‘sons of David’, many of whom required discipline because they were merely sinful human beings..Even Jesus, the true ‘son of David’, though not sinful, was disciplined and trained by the LORD - and perfected through suffering.
Looking forward we see that it is Jesus the Christ who will reign on David’s throne forever as the Messiah. He is the true heir of the Promise. The people of Israel that God promised to plant in their inheritance forever will incorporate the saved Gentiles as well. We, the wild Gentile olive branches have been grafted into the Olive tree of Israel.
Dear Father, thank You for the stability we have in Christ as Your people, living under the righteous rule of Your Son forever.
