DAY 240 - BIG PICTURE IN A YEAR -THE UNITED MONARCHY

Reading: Psalm 51

King David was a man after God’s own heart. This can be most clearly seen as a contrast with King Saul, who was more concerned about being honoured in the peoples’ eyes. When Saul disobeyed God’s instructions to completely eradicate the Amalekites, he was less concerned about disobeying God and more concerned that Samuel would honour him in front of the people. When God rejected him as king, he even consulted a medium.

David by contrast, even though he had committed adultery and murder, sought the LORD’s face. His primary concern was being forgiven by the LORD and seeking to maintain that close relationship with God. The Psalms of David as a whole reflect his desire for a close relationship with God, and show how much he reflected on God. When God chose him as king, He chose him because of the state of his heart towards God.

Looking forwards we see that the Anointed of the LORD would be a man like King David who had a wholehearted attitude to God. Jesus.

Prayer
Dear Father, help us to have a wholehearted attitude towards You. Restore to us the joy of Your salvation, and uphold us by Your generous Spirit. Then we will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners shall be converted to You.
