Day 126 - FOUNDATION STONES IN A YEAR
Reading: Genesis 4:1-12
When reading the story of Cain and Abel you’ll notice that Abel’s sacrifice was found to be more acceptable to God than Cain’s. I have often wrestled with this story trying to understand why Abel was commended by God.
The key can be found in Genesis 4:7 of today’s reading. God says to Cain, “If you do well, will you not be accepted?” See what God says in the same verse; “And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.” Was it Cain’s attitude that precluded the blessing? Before God had spoken to him Cain could have denied any responsibility, he could have said that he did not know. But, once God had spoken to him, he was faced with a choice. Confess his lack of faith and his attitude which did not honour God, or what? The ‘what’ was severe! Genesis 4:12 “When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth!”
Abel brought his sacrifice by faith, believing in the invisible God, with an attitude of humble submission. How are you offering your sacrifice to God?
Prayer:
Dear God, Please help me to do well as Abel did. Amen
