DAY FOURTY-FIVE - BIG PICTURE IN A YEAR - THE PEOPLE
Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.
Genesis 2: 8
Reading: Genesis 2: 8; Luke 3: 23-38
Those of you who have done the King's Cross Big Picture course, know that in every Module we look for Jesus. A fundamental characteristic of the biblical theology approach to the Bible is that Jesus is at the centre of the story from start to finish. So where is Jesus in Genesis 2, our focus for February?
The answer is found in one of our readings for today - Genesis 2: 8. We see a man, a human being, that God had created. Adam. When we go and read our next reading for the day, Luke 3: 23-38, we find ourselves confronted by a long genealogy. But don't give up or lose heart. Press through to the very end of this genealogy. You will be rewarded with an interesting discovery - Jesus' genealogy goes all the way back to Adam. And Adam is called the son of God.
What is this genealogy trying to tell us? That Jesus is truly human. He has a human lineage. He is, in a very real sense, our brother, our fellow man. He is a son of Adam just as you and I are.
What does this mean for us? It means that Jesus qualifies to be our substitute. He qualifies as our redeemer. He qualifies as our sin-bearer before God.
Prayer
Thank you dear Lord, for being willing to take on real, true humanity in order to save me.
