Day 96 - FOUNDATION STONES IN A YEAR
Reading: Genesis 2; Psalm 90
Before we continue our devotional study of the resurrection, we must consider what the Bible teaches about death.
The creation account implies that death was not part of God’s original intention for man. It was either completely absent or keep at bay by the presence of the Tree of Life. Imagine that. Before we continue just take a few moments to picture a world without death; of life lived in the benevolent presence of the all-glorious God. All that came to an abrupt halt the day that sin entered Eden through the wiles of the serpent and the disobedience of the first man and woman.
Sin led to banishment from the Tree of Life and thus, eventually, death entered the world. The Bible is unequivocal when it comes to the origin of death – sin. Not just in Genesis but elsewhere in the Old Testament too, death is connected to sin – for example, in Psalm 90: 7-10.
Prayer
God, sometimes I fondly imagine that if I had been in the Garden instead of Adam and Eve, I would have obeyed you and somehow, escaped death. But, in fact, my own life is a testament to my tendency to sin. So, once again today, I humble myself before the cross of Christ and say…thank you.
