Day 7 - FOUNDATION STONES IN A YEAR

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

Luke 19:10

Did you ever get lost in the supermarket as a kid? That heart-dropping moment when you realise you can’t see your Mom anywhere, the adrenalin, the fear! In our main reading for today, we see one of the main reasons for why Jesus came to Earth as a human being – in order to look for, and rescue, lost human beings.

Why are human beings lost? And in what way are they lost? In order to answer this question, we must go back to the beginning of the story, to Genesis 3.

So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side[e] of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

Picture the pre-Fall world if you can. Adam and Eve living in joyful harmony with one another and with God. Living, in fact, in the exact way that God had created mankind to live – in close, secure fellowship and partnership with Himself within easy reach of eternal life.

Now imagine the post-Fall world. Adam and Eve wrestling a cursed ground to eke out a living, feeling decay entering their bodies, mourning the loss of Eden, the loss of their secure and intimate relationship with God. Fending for themselves. The emotional, physical and psychological toll of their sin was immense.

This is the lost condition of man. Wandering around, confused, unsure, deeply afraid of life – and death – needy, rejected and hopeless. But more than that. Mankind is under the heel of the one who stole his crown, the devil. Not only are we suffering the psychological effects of being ‘lost in the supermarket’ but we have been taken captive and are held in a sort of prisoner-of-war camp.

Our dear Father sent His Son to seek, and rescue, these lost ones. In order to do so, he had to enter our world, inhabit our space, carve out an escape route through his own body. Oh where would you be right now if Jesus had not come to seek and save you?

Prayer

Father God, how can I ever thank You enough for remember me in my wretched condition? Thank You. Thank You. Thank You.

For the family

Explain the study in an age-appropriate way. Then have a discussion with your children about getting lost and let them share with you what they think they could do in that eventuality. Together, work out a plan of action so that your children feel secure.
