DAY 67 - BIG PICTURE IN A YEAR - THE FALL & THE FLOOD
When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it.
Genesis 3: 6
Reading: Genesis 3: 1-6
Genesis 3, the section of the Bible we are studying this month, shows us the very moment in which sin entered mankind and the world. This helps us to define what sin is.
Throughout Scripture we see that the essence of sin is to put human judgment above God’s command. We do this because we conclude that God’s Word cannot be relied upon as the ultimate source of truth. And this is a tremendous insult to God.
Adam and Eve had free choice. This is not sin. They were tempted. Even temptation is not sin. Jesus himself was tempted yet without sin. Sin happens when the human will is exercised against God’s Word.
As Christians we need to reverse the innate and sinful tendency we have to put our human reasoning above what God has said. We must work hard at it every day. We give God the honour due to His holy name when we believe what He says to us. Also, in this way we will thwart the schemes of the serpent, who still tries to deceive but who doesn’t find it quite so easy anymore.
Prayer
Father, help me to reverse my sinful tendency to put my reasoning above Your Word.
For the Family
Tell your children the story of Abraham and of how God told him to go to a place that God would show him. Discuss how difficult that would be for your family - just getting up and moving but you don't know where to yet. Yet Abraham obeyed because he knew that God is completely holy and trustworthy.
