Day 41 - FOUNDATION STONES IN A YEAR
Reading: 1 Timothy 3: 16
We could spend the rest of the month just looking at the direct
statements that Scripture makes concerning the Deity of Christ; but there
is plenty more to say so we will just spend one last day looking at another
unequivocal passage about God the Son.
16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
In this passage, Paul presents a short summary of the Gospel, which
amounts to a potted history of the life and work of Jesus Christ. He says
that this is a description of “the mystery of godliness”. The mystery is
rooted in believing important truths, Biblical facts. What are these facts?
Number 1 is, that God was manifest in the flesh. It couldn’t be clearer
that Paul is speaking about Jesus when he says that God was manifest in
the flesh. This is THE most important foundational doctrine, upon which
our entire salvation rests. Jesus, the eternal Word of God, laid aside His
glory and took upon Himself mortal flesh. He did this in order to be
identified with sinful man and become sin for us. He died on the cross as
a substitutionary sacrifice to make payment for our sin. He did this so
that we could be identified with His godliness; covered in His
righteousness and restored to the Father.
Paul goes on to say that this God in the flesh was justified in the Spirit,
that He was seen of angels, that He was preached to the Gentiles, that He
was believed on in the world and was received up into glory. Today spend
time conceiving of Jesus in this light.
