DAY 238 - BIG PICTURE IN A YEAR- THE UNITED MONARCHY
Reading: 1 Samuel 16:1-13; 2 Chronicles 16: 9
Saul was rejected by God, but David was chosen by God. In our reading for today Samuel made the mistake of assuming that Eliab was the LORD’s anointed, because he was outwardly impressive. God, however, looks at the heart. The heart of Eliab did not contain what God was looking for. God was looking for a man after His own heart, and it was in David that He found such a heart.
2 Chronicles 16:9 states: “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him”. This is what happened in the choosing of David as king. It seems that none of David’s family had eyes to see his God-loving heart. David was just the youngest brother in their family. After the anointing of David to be the next king, something special took place - the Spirit of the LORD came on Him in a special way.
Looking forward, we again see Jesus. The LORD’s anointed, the Messiah, was anointed by a prophet and received an anointing by the Spirit of the LORD to enable mighty works of deliverance.
Prayer
Dear Father, You are so much deeper than us. We tend to be so shallow and to see things from the surface perspective. Please help us to see beyond the natural, the external. Help us, like You to see the heart shining through.
