DAY 211- BIG PICTURE IN A YEAR - THE LAND
Reading: Genesis 19:12-29; Peter 2: 4-9
Yesterday we saw how faithfilled Abraham was – something he demonstrated by leaving the land he was from, and travelling to the promised land. Once there, because of God’s blessing, Abraham and his household became exceedingly wealthy – so much so, that Abraham and Lot had to part company, which we read about in Genesis 13.
Lot chose to live in the well watered plains near Sodom and Gomorrah, while Abraham chose to live in Hebron, a way off from Sodom. It was only a matter of time before God judged Sodom and Gomorrah because of the outcry against all the evil practices there.
The judgement on Sodom and Gomorrah foreshadows the final judgment on unbelievers living on God’s earth. 2 Peter 2:4-9 (NKJV) states: "For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly; and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly; and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds) - then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment". 2 Peter 3:7 states: “But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men” (NKJV).
The future judgement will no doubt be similar. The presence of the remnant of believers on the Earth on judgement day will not prevent the destruction of the earth - as was the case with the ungodly in Sodom and Gomorrah, despite Abraham’s mediation. But, as was the case in Sodom, the LORD will rescue the righteous from the destruction in the nick of time.
Prayer
Dear Father, the destruction of the wicked and the earth by fire is quite an alarming thought, but we rejoice in Your deliverance to come. Amen
