DAY 174- BIG PICTURE IN A YEAR - THE WILDERNESS

The Lord spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Desert of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt...

Numbers 1:1

Reading: Exodus 19:1-6; 1 Peter 2:9-10

Are you a first-generation Christian, or was it your parents who introduced you to the Lord? Family has a greater impact on your life than you may realize – and this we will see as we rejoin the people of God, at Mt Sinai.

They have already been at the foot of this mountain for two whole years! Tremendous things have happened here. They have been shaken by a theophany, dramatic appearance, of God – and they have, of course, received God’s law.

The book of Exodus tells us how God’s people dramatically escaped their wretched life of slavery in Egypt. It tells us that their escape was enacted in a very unusual way – God asked them to act in faith by putting the blood of an innocent lamb on the doorpost of their homes. This, God said, would ensure that the angel of death passed over their homes. They obeyed, and found God to be true to His Word.

They hadn’t always been an obedient people. Many years of forgetting or ignoring the Word of the Lord had caused them to be hardened, and then enslaved, from generation to generation for four hundred years. The first generation who went to live in Egypt under Jacob quickly forgot the word of God and failed to teach their children. This resulted in every generation after that forgetting and rejecting God’s Word.

Being enslaved to sin is a terrible condition and more so if that sin has been woven into the weft of a family’s life for a number of generations. Forgiveness of all your sins was purchased in full by Christ at the cross, but freedom from slavery begins as you consistently come to the mountain of God to have His law, His ways, written on your heart.

Prayer
Lord, thank You for my escape from the Kingdom of darkness. I consecrate this month to come to You to have your Spirit write Your law on my heart and remove my slavish mentality.
