Day 11- FOUNDATION STONES IN A YEAR

Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?
Luke 14:34

Reading: Matthew 5:13-16; Mark 9:42-50

Jesus came to seek and save the lost. But can he help us when we lose something – our saltiness, our taste?

When Jesus was teaching his disciples he remarked that they were blessed to be physically present with him and to hear the truths that he was sharing with them. He often admonished them by saying, “Let him who has ears, hear!”

It is said that one only realises the value of something once it has been lost, sometimes never to be found again. As children of God we are given the opportunity of sharing in the life of Christ on a daily basis. We have access to him by way of his Word, his Holy Spirit and the fellowship we share with fellow believers. When Jesus used the metaphor of the salt losing its saltiness he could well have been speaking of a disciple who had grown lukewarm in his relationship with the Christ.

How is it possible that we could become lukewarm? It’s not easy, but nor is it impossible. It happens slowly, a gradual drawing away from the source of all life. The opposite is also true. We maintain our most important relationships by way of consistent communication and involvement. Decreased communication, decreased value. Increased communication, increased value.

Maybe it’s time to metaphorically taste yourself and ascertain whether you are as salty as you know you ought to be? Jesus is more than willing and able to restore you.

Prayer

Dear God, teach me to maintain my communication with You as a vital necessity.

For the family

Prepare various different bowls of snacks. Ask the children to tell you which ones are salty and which ones are not. Then let them eat the snacks while you explain the study in an age-appropriate way.
